Integrative Design with John Boecker

Integrative Design with John Boecker

'Integrative Design' is another term for 'whole system design.' Integrative design begins by bringing together all participants early in the design process to optimize interactions between building components as a system, in order to maximize performance. Over 13 stages, this approach can reduce first cost, minimize operations cost, enhance energy efficiency, significantly reduce environmental impacts, and eliminate costly mistakes resulting from lack of effective communication between parties.

The eight-hour workshop begins by looking at natural systems as our model for whole systems thinking. The course presents a step-by-step guide to implementing integrative design from the Proposal and Pre-design phases through Construction Delivery and Operations phases. We also examine how to move beyond mere green buildings toward restorative and regenerative design. Multiple case study examples are presented, illustrating how to neutralize first costs while achieving high performance and integrating LEED® credits.
